Havana, Florida

Wanda Mae (Fisher) Sprague passed away on January 23, 2024 in Tallahassee, Florida at the age of 99.

She was born on May 20, 1924 to Frank Fisher and Charlotte “Lottie” (Hempfling) Fisher in Stringtown (Boone Co), Kentucky.

She was predeceased by her husband George and her sister Dolly.

Wanda kept detailed diaries from 1935-1944. They offered great insight in how growing up during the Depression and World War II really did make her era the Greatest Generation.

She was valedictorian of her class of 1941 at Hebron High School and attended Eastern Kentucky State Teachers College, but left after 5 days because she thought many classes were unnecessary.

She then enrolled in the business school at the Cincinnati YMCA and after graduating worked at the Y until the end of the war.

She married George upon his return from the war in 1944 and they opened Sprague’s Grocery in Taylorsport.

They ran the grocery for over 40 years making many friends over the years. Particularly the local kids trading empty soft drink bottles for penny candy.

Survivors include son Gary and his wife Sheila of Havana, Florida. Granddaughter Jennie Barrow (Trace) Jacksonville, Grandson Geoff Sprague (Kasey) Tallahassee. Great granddaughters Mollie and Addie Sprague and Great grandsons Drew and Ben Barrow. Barb Black, niece and Greg Sprague, nephew.
