Tallahassee

Virginia Lee "Ginny" Coultas, 95, passed away peacefully on April 27, 2025, in Tallahassee, Florida. Ginny’s life was marked by an easy-going nature that made everyone feel welcome around her. She remained contented through all circumstances—a testament to her deep faith—and radiated love and intelligence wherever she went.

Born on September 22, 1929, in Springfield, Illinois, Ginny was the eldest daughter of Pauline and William S. Carter. She grew up in a home where faith and service were central values—principles that would guide her throughout her life.

Ginny’s life was a beautiful tapestry woven with love for family, dedication to community, and an enduring passion for the arts. To her four sons—David, Charles, Steven, and Peter—she was an incredible and loving mother whose unwavering support shaped their lives. To her beloved husband of 71 years, Charles "Lynn" Coultas, she was a steadfast partner as they shared countless adventures together until his passing on September 1, 2024.

Professionally, Ginny made a lasting impact as a teacher at the First Presbyterian Church Pre-School in Tallahassee and at schools abroad during her travels to Haiti and Zambia. She combined her love for teaching with her artistic talents to nurture young minds and inspire creativity among the children she taught. Her influence extended beyond the classroom into the broader community through her acts of service and artistic contributions.

A gifted artist throughout her lifetime, Ginny explored various media including oil paints, watercolors, charcoal and pastels, and clay sculpture. Her creative spirit was evident not only in her artwork but also in the way she approached life—with joy, curiosity, and grace.

Faith played a central role in Ginny’s journey. Her commitment to Christian service began at Elliott Avenue Baptist Church in Springfield and led her to mission work across Mexico, Honduras, Ghana, Haiti, and Zambia. At home in Havana, Florida, she and Lynn opened their hearts—and their farm—to hundreds of local children through Camp COCO (Camping Opportunities for Children Organization), a summer day camp that provided outdoor adventures and spiritual enrichment for many summers. For spiritual community in Tallahassee, Ginny found fellowship at Friends Meeting.

She is lovingly remembered by her sons David (Maryann), Charles (Sally), Steven (Carol), and Peter (Cindy); grandchildren, Christopher, James, John Charles, Carley, Kristen, Elyssa, George, Sarah Jean, and Craig; eight great-grandchildren; her sisters, Helen Day and Nancy Davison and brother, Bill Carter. She now joins those who preceded her in death: her husband Lynn; sisters Pauline Scholl and Barbara Harbold; and parents Pauline Carter and William S. Carter.

A memorial service celebrating Ginny’s remarkable life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ginny’s memory can be made payable to Tallahassee Friends Meeting, c/o Rebecca Miles, Treasurer, 3885 Imaginary Road, Tallahassee, Florida 32309. May the memory of Virginia Lee "Ginny" Coultas bring comfort to all who knew and loved her.
