Biography

Mary Lou Gandy Shinault Murphy, 78 of Havana passed away Monday, October 14, 2013 at her residence.

A celebration of her Life will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 19, 2013 at Salem United Methodist Church in Havana, with Pastor Greg Doss officiating. Internment will be at a later date. Mary Lou Murphy was born in Marianna, Fl. on September 10, 1935 to Mildred and Dick Gandy. Mrs. Murphy was raised in Havana, Fl, graduated from Havana High School in 1953, received her degree in Education at Florida Southern University and her Masters in Early Childhood Education from Troy State University. She taught 1st grade for a semester in West Palm Beach, Fl., then moved to Quincy, Fl. and taught 1st grade for 2 ½ years. She married the love of her life, Ottie W. Shinault, in March 1960. They lived for brief periods of time in Marianna, Mississippi, Mobile, Al., Enterprise, Al., Jesup, Ga., Hinesville, Ga. then back to Enterprise, Al. where she chose to raise her family. She retired from the YMCA of Enterprise where she was a pre-school teacher/secretary in 1995 and moved back to Havana, Fl.

Mrs. Murphy was a member of the Salem United Methodist church and choir, Ladies Circle of Enterprise United Methodist, Alpha Omicron Pi sorority member; she volunteered at the Gadsden Art Center and tutored at Havana Elementary. For many years she was a Methodist Youth Fellowship teacher in Enterprise, Al. and member of the choir at Enterprise United Methodist. Her hobbies included reading and gardening.

Survivors Include: Children, Richard W. Shinault of Havana, Fl., M. Suzanne Boyle (Chuck) of Denver, NC, Lisa C. Shinault-Fratesi (Will) of Decatur, Ga.; grandchildren, Jennifer L. Boyle Akin (Cooper) of Ft. Bragg, NC, Phillip C. Boyle and Christopher M. Boyle of Denver, NC.; sister-in-law, Mrs. Marietta Gandy Petters (Skip) of Atlanta, Ga., the Heath Murphy of Enterprise, Al., a number of nieces and nephews and dear friends she considered family.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Ottie William Shinault and later her second husband, Heath Murphy; also her parents Mildred E. and Norman F. Gandy and brother Richard N. Gandy.
