George Glover Kemp

January 21, 1935 — February 17, 2026

Havana

George Glover Kemp was born on January 21, 1935, the first son of Glover Lee and Eileen Pearl (Cone) Kemp. He grew up on a farm in Havana, FL, in a time when shade tobacco was grown in Gadsden County, and like so many others, he was involved with all aspects of it as a teenager, from working in the fields to working in the packing house. He also worked unloading appliances from train deliveries and at the local grocery store in Havana.

After high school, George served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. After his discharge, he landed a job at the Tallahassee Democrat selling advertising and creating newspaper ads. He loved it so much that he continued working in the advertising/newspaper business until his retirement in 1997.

In the 1970s, he created and produced a weekly cartoon strip called Tin Cup that was published in the Marietta Daily Journal. He had many interests such as cars and drawing, but his passion was photography. Through his photography, he documented his world here in North Florida and in his travels in Europe.

He was a life-long member of the First Baptist Church in Havana, FL, and was active in photographing and creating videos of church events and weddings. He was a founding member of the Shade Tobacco Museum in Havana and helped with exhibits. He did the photography for the 2024 Barns of Gadsden County calendar, which was a success and was covered by the local news channel.

George is survived by his brother, Robert Gary Kemp, daughter, Liane Michel York (husband Dale), grandson Jason Schuessler, granddaughter Jessica Schuessler, and three great grandchildren, Kinley, Kylie, and Bryce Williamson.

George loved people, family, country, and God (and his cat Pinto). He will be dearly missed.
