Alice Van Tassel

Alice was a long time resident of Havana and part of the Salem United Methodist family. She was best known for her sense of humor, commitment to family and friends, her love to travel, and her love of cooking. She was retired from the Des Moines, Iowa school system where she was head cook for many years. Affectionately known by family and close friends as “Go-Go Granny” she never missed an opportunity to go across the nation or just across town. She also took great joy in giving to others in their times of need as well as working at the thrift shop in Greensboro, FL and Community Cares in Havana.
Her sense of adventure led her to travel between Iowa and Florida by herself for several years until, at the age of 75, she eloped with Rex Van Tassel and settled in Havana permanently.
Alice Van Tassel, age 90, joyfully and peacefully joined her heavenly father after a long illness on July 1st at her home in Havana, Florida. Alice is survived by a daughter, Linda Williams, of Havana, FL, a son, Dale Coffman (Priscilla), of Eldon, Iowa, a daughter in law, Lorena Williams of Fox Lake, WI and three stepchildren, Shirley (Bob) Campbell of Tallahassee, Bruce (Alina) Van Tassel of Miami, FL, and Brian (Mary) Van Tassel of Havana. She leaves a long legacy of eight grandchildren, six step grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren, Six step great grandchildren, and seven great-great grandchildren.
Alice was preceded in death by her son Ralph Coffman in 1968, her husbands Forrest Wing in 1987 and Rex Van Tassel in 1999. Although she is now out of pain and is enjoying the fruits of her life with our heavenly father, she will be missed by those left behind.
A celebration of life Memorial Service will be Saturday, July 9th at 11:00am at Salem United Methodist Church in Havana, Florida. Officiating Pastor Gordon VanNamee. Memorial Contributions may be made to Big Bend Hospice House, Tallahassee Florida or Salem United Methodist Church Havana, Florida.
